Upgrading Firmware on the Belkin F5D7230-4 router

with 5 comments

After successfully flashing DD-WRT onto my FON router I wanted to try and upgrade my Belkin router to DD-WRT . The Belkin F5D7230-4 v2000 router is a cheap router based around the Broadcom chipset with 2mb of flash. The complete specifications for this router can be found here. After doing some research on the net I found out that 1. DD-WRT is partially supported on this router. 2. Since the available memory is too small nothing usable can be accomplished by upgrading the firmware. 3. work is going on on several fronts to get DD-WRT micro edition compatible with this router. 4. A lot documentation is available to install a USB port as well as a serial console on this hardware. The FCC ID for this particular router is FCC ID: K7SF5D7234A I decided to go ahead despite the fact that the router is partially supported by DD-WRT, You can easily recover from a bad flash by making sure the firmware is available to the router during startup. As stated on most sites I was able to flash the router successfully and got WLAN working but LAN ports were not working properly. Some of the sites that I found useful were

  1. haxxed.com : Custom firmware for Belkin routers with 2MB Flash
  2. F5D7230-4 v2000 firmware : Original firmware for the Belkin F5d7230-4 v2000 router.
  3. TFTP server : TFTP server used to upload the firmware onto the router.

Note: DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TRY FLASHING DD-WRT onto this particular router, you will gain no serious advantage and will be left with a router with no web based administration interface and will have to re-flash to original firmware.

  1. I had a similar problem, but luckily I had two of these things lying around anyways. However, now (about 8 months after the original flash) I’m trying to recover the original firmware but I don’t know how. Any tips? There don’t seem to be any tutorials explaining how to REMOVE DD-WRT.

  2. Hi Ammar,

    1. You should make sure that you download the correct firmware for your router, the link to the Belkin router firmware page is below

    http://networking.belkin.com/update/#1

    2. Disable wireless connection on your PC, also disable the firewall on your PC. Connect your PC to the router with a LAN cable.

    3. Set your PC’s IP to 192.168.2.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, set the gateway as 192.168.2.1. Do not worry about the DNS settings leave them empty.

    4. Download the TFTP server from here

    ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/tftp.exe

set up the TFTP server and make sure the firmware image is available.

    5. Restart the router and look at the TFTP window to see if a connection was made, if a connection was made make sure you do not switch off the computer or unplug the router until the firmware is fully uploaded.

    6. once the firmware is uploaded, restart router once, now you can log into the router’s admin page at the following address http://192.168.2.1.

If something went wrong restart the whole process until you succeed.

note: it is very critical that you choose the right image as some versions of Belkin hardware differ from others. make sure you match the versions properly.

    hope this helps

  4. Hi Chris,

If you tried the instructions in the above comment and it did not you should try the instructions at this site http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13796

  5. cipher27, the information you provided is only valid for routers that are not already flashed with DD-WRT. If they are flashed with DD-WRT and the default settings still apply, the router responds to 192.168.1.1.

Unfortunately in my case the firmware (belkin_rt_54g_uk_4.05.03.bin) is rejected by the router. It is the right one for the v2000de.

Any ideas how that works *properly*?

PS: Flashing using the webinterface does not work. Neither wired nor wireless. Upgrade failed.
